Apparel & Textile Design

The Apparel and Textile Design program emphasizes creativity and experimentation that mingles design with art. Students combine fine art, couture and technical design to create original garments, which reflect an understanding of global issues such as sustainability and cultural dress.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts provides professional preparation in apparel and textile design. The core of the program emphasizes aesthetics and creativity; two- and three-dimensional apparel and textile design skills; design technologies; the historical and cultural aspects of dress and textiles; sustainable design; and the role of apparel and textiles in a global context. Senior BFA students design and present a final signature collection and professional portfolio that reflects the development of a design philosophy and individual career goals.

The Bachelor of Arts degree program in Apparel and Textiles provides students with a foundation in art; fundamental skills in apparel and textile design; design technologies; sustainable design; art history and visual culture; the historical and cultural aspects of dress and textiles; and the role of apparel and textiles in a global context. Two years proficiency in a foreign language is required.

Apparel and Textile Design students have the opportunity to apply for a one-year visiting student program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York in the junior year. Students who are admitted and complete the year at FIT receive an associate degree from FIT upon completion of the baccalaureate degree from Michigan State University.  Students may also take part in internships and study abroad opportunities.
