MISSION STATEMENT
(SCENE) Metrospace is an exhibition and non-traditional performance space located in downtown East Lansing, Michigan, just off of Grand River Avenue on Charles Street. Founded in 2004 by the City of East Lansing, as a response to the “Cool Cities” initiative set forth by the former Governor Granholm. (SCENE) Metrospace has maintained a diverse range of visual art exhibitions, musical performances, and other forms of expression since its opening. In the summer of 2015, the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Michigan State University and the City of East Lansing joined forces to program and operate (SCENE) Metrospace.
Through exhibitions featuring regional, national, and international artists (SCENE) Metrospace hopes to challenge our ways of thinking about the visual and performing arts. Through free public exhibitions, programs, performances, and events (SCENE) Metrospace offers hands-on experiences in the arts and professional development opportunities for Michigan State University students and faculty, and the greater East Lansing community. Programs include poetry readings, artist’s talks, exhibitions, and special performances.
(SCENE) Metrospace regularly hosts open calls for proposals for local, national, and international exhibitions, welcoming entries from artists of all disciplines. Its juried exhibitions and themed shows, held throughout the year provide meaningful experiences with a range of topics and mediums. Engaging in creative dialogue, art-making, and experimentations, (SCENE) Metrospace challenges its viewers to expand upon their understanding of contemporary art.
