On Walls was a one day pop-up exhibition that was the result of a week long graphic design workshop about visual literacy. The workshop was lead by Joshua Unikel and was attended by undergraduate and graduate students from Michigan State University.
Joshua Unikel works at the intersection of visual and literary art, focusing on the overlap between graphic design and the literary essay. Unikel has an MFA in visual art from SUNY Buffalo’s Department of Art and an MFA in creative writing from The University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program. He is the co-editor of Beyond Category and assistant editor of Seneca Review.
He has shown at The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; DesignPhiladelphia; Griffith University Art Gallery (Brisbane); and elsewhere. His work has appeared in The Journal, TriQuarterly Online, Essay Review, Fugue, PANK, Sonora Review, The Normal School, Essay Daily, The Collagist, kill author, and other national journals. He has lectured on visual and literary art at The University of Oregon, Stony Brook Manhattan, Carnegie Mellon University, The Open Book Workshop, AIGA Design Educators Conference, AWP, and NonfictioNow.
