Human Collective

Solo exhibition featuring sculptures and paintings by Mark Chatterley.

August 4 – October 2, 2020

This solo exhibition features a new body of work by Mark Chatterley informed by the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, human relationships, and a need to collectively come together. In Chatterley’s interdisciplinary practice everything is in a visual state of flux, changing, and reforming. His work evokes a sense of decay and life while addressing that nothing is permanent and nothing stays the same. Chatterley’s work engages thoughts and feelings of the human condition, beauty in the malformed, and acceptance of the inevitable. Chatterley is doing work of our time for our time.

“Alone in the Human Collective. Humans are affecting the world. In order for us to survive, we need to come together with one mind. We have to act as a global village. Our actions affect each other. We can’t have separate agendas, otherwise nothing will work. This may be an impossibility, but I can hope.

Relationship in a Pandemic. If you live with a partner, who you come in contact with will affect the other person. You are linked together in your social interactions. This is how the virus is spread.”

Mark Chatterley is an actively practicing professional artist with over 30 years of experience. His prolific interdisciplinary works in clay, metal, and on paper reveal the ways in which everything is either moving toward or away from nothingness. Life, death, creation and destruction, this is the world Chatterley finds himself in. In his creative practice, he wants to echo these thoughts.

Chatterley’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Ceramics Monthly, Contemporary Sculptors, and The Best 500 Ceramics: A Decade in Clay in addition to other publications. Chatterley’s work has been in feature films and inspired Vernissage by Donovan Seidle, which has been performed by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. His work is held in private collections and by public museums and educational institutions across the United States and internationally in Taiwan, Italy, New Zealand, Korea, Ukraine, and India. Chatterley holds a BFA and an MFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University.
