A Second Year MFA Exhibition by Shelby Freehling

Kresge Art Center | Gallery 101
After traveling all summer long, I finally landed my feet back in Michigan. I was delighted to see familiar faces. Sometimes we forget how deep our connections run, until we take moments apart. While my body was physically in Lansing, my psyche was having a hard time keeping up. I obsessively started journaling and watching the time. Making wishes with friends every time I saw the digits align in threes. I reorganized my possessions after months in the car and new places. Compartmentalizing not only them, but my thoughts, as relationships had grown and evolved. I thought about the wishes we were making. Unrealistically high or quite mundanely logical. How much effort would we put towards these hopes? Wishing for threes while gambling and taking risks in the slot machine of life. Just begging for a win. Despite all I felt and learned while away, making steps forward, old habits slyly snuck their way back in; like fog rising in the morning. All the categorizing couldn’t stop a racing mind that lingered in places it was best to move on from. Unable to leave the past out of sight, I find myself walking backwards.
Kresge Art Center Galleries hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, and are open to all.
